LIE ANGLE

Lie angle is described as the angle between the sole of the club and the shaft’s centreline. The lie angle of the club determines how the sole of the club is positioned to the ground at setup and impact.

Building an iron involves determining the most effective lie angle for each golfer, as it plays an influencing role in the starting direction of your golf shot. Lie angles can be customised to flatter or more upright angle to suit your individual tendencies and impact positions.

CLUB LENGTH

Club length is also unique to each golfer. Clubs are measured in inches and can be altered prior to installation by cutting the shaft to length at the factory. Each club can be built standard as per the manufacturer’s specifications, lengthened or shortened.
To understand more about club length and how height, arm length and setup play an influencing role, check out our blog below.

SHAFT FLEX AND WEIGHT

A shaft’s flex rating represents its ability to bend and flex during a swing. A shaft’s flex and weight will have a significant bearing on its performance characteristics. In general players with a faster swing speed or a faster tempo require a heavier and stiffer shaft, while a player with a slower, smoother swing will require a lighter more flexible shaft.

Shafts come in different flexes described generally by the following terms and we’ve also included a general swing speed for the driver to categorise which flex should be most suitable for your swing.

  • A Flex – Senior Flex
  • Driver – Under 85mph
  • W or L Flex – Ladies Flex
  • Driver – Under 75 mph
  • R Flex – Regular Flex
  • Driver – 85 to 95 mph
  • S Flex – Stiff Flex
  • Driver – 95mph to 110mph
  • XS Flex – Extra Stiff Flex
  • Driver – 110mph+

LOFT

Loft is the angle of the clubface relative to the ground and can be an influencing factor in launch angle and peak height of your golf shots.

In general, if you’re a golfer that hits a higher ball flight and wants to reduce it, you can opt for lower lofted clubs such as a 9-degree driver and if you’re a golfer that hits the ball too low and wants to increase height, then choosing a driver with more loft such as a 12°, would provide some assistance in achieving optimal launch angles.

Drivers, Fairway Woods, and Hybrids are chosen based on the loft required and most come with an adjustable adaptor for which you can change the overall loft of the club at home. We would suggest selecting the loft closest to assist with your desired ball flight and then adjusting after using it at the range or on course.

When it comes to lofts for irons, wedges, putters, and bonded woods, these are adjusted by the manufacturers to the specifications you request.

BOUNCE, GRIND AND FINISH

Each manufacturer has its own predetermined set of wedges with unique bounce, grind and finish options. Bounce and grinds are selected by determining the turf conditions of your local golf courses, how you like to setup with short game shots plus how you deliver the club into impact. All of these aspects play a role in selecting the correct wedge to improve your short game.
